5 tips for using a self-storage unit in the winter

Self-Storage unit

Adding absorpoles could reduce condensation and moisture

If you are worried about moisture or condensation getting into your self-storage unit over the winter period, you may wish to consider purchasing absorpoles to hang inside your unit. Absorpoles are used for moisture and condensation reduction in storage units, garages and shipping containers. Made from calcium chloride and plastic, their aim is to suck all the moisture from the air and protect the items held within the storage unit. Simply remove the packaging and connect the absorpole to the top of the container – they are designed to reduce space by fitting in between wall corrugations.

Plan your trips to storage carefully

Not only does the winter weather bring about the cold and wetness, but you can also expect the nights to draw in earlier, leaving our streets and roads darker. If you are planning to take a trip to your self-storage unit, we recommend planning this well so you are not driving during the night on roads that may not have the best lighting available. Particularly as the winter weather can often make roads more dangerous, combining this with driving in the dark can often lead to potential accidents.

Try to plan your trip to your self-storage unit whilst it’s still light so you can get to us safely, load and unload everything you need and still make it home before the darkness settles in for the night. We also recommend bringing a torch with you as your unit may not have lighting inside, and it can often be a little more difficult to see. If you do need to access your self-storage unit at night, however, you have 24/7 access when you choose to hire a storage unit with Jennings Storage

Clear out your seasonal items for your self-storage unit

Do you have a towering pile in your loft or cupboard of seasonal items that need to be put out of sight (and mind) for the winter months? Maybe you have a pile of summer clothes that aren’t going to be used or summer garden furniture you have no way of storing. Before you make your next trip to your self-storage unit, try and think of all the things you are not going to need until the weather brightens up. Collect up all your seasonal items and bring them over to your storage unit with you.

Using a self-storage unit to store all your seasonal items means you don’t run out of pace at home during the winter months, and you don’t miss the summer weather every time you look at your seasonal belongings! Tuck them safely away until they are needed again next year!

Your self-storage unit is ready to handle any type of winter weather

Many people may try to tell you that you need to pay special attention to your self-storage unit to ensure it is ready to handle the winter weather. However, when you store your items with Jennings Storage, we can guarantee that each of our storage units are ready to handle just about any weather that is coming over the English borders this year. Our self-storage units are made of corten steel, as they need to be strong enough to withstand sea spray, storms and wind whilst being transported across the open sea. Rest assured, your items will be safe in your Jennings self-storage unit this year!

Give yourself plenty of room at the front of your self-storage unit

You never know what the weather is going to be like on the day you decide to visit your self-storage unit. It could be chilly but sunny, slightly miserable, or you could be faced with torrential rain and snow! If you are visiting your storage unit during the winter months, we recommend you leave some space between the doors of your unit and the items you are storing inside. This is because if you are desperately trying to get into your unit whilst the rain is pouring down; you may wish to jump inside to have a little shelter from the weather. If you have multiple items in the way, not only will you not be able to get to safety, but these items could get wet and damaged if the rain comes through your open doors.
